Legong; The Gracious Dance in Bali

Legong is considered as classic dance in Bali which has complex various movements bind with the structure of its tabuh accompanist –traditional musical instrument players- Legong word itself comes from the word “leg” means smooth and curved dance movement and the word “gong” means gamelan –traditional music instrument- or in other word it means dance movement which is bind (especially for its accentuation) by its accompanist gamelan. The gamelan here is known as Semar Pegulingan.
Legong is developed in the kingdom age in the second half of 19th century. The legend said this dance was created by the ill prince who in his weak state dreamt about two beautiful girl dance gracefully accompanied by beautiful gamelan music. When he regained his health, he recreated that dance again complete with the gamelan.
Still maintain the old concept as when it was created, this dance is performed by two girls who not yet have their menstruation, under the light of the full moon together with fan in the kingdom’s garden. In its later development the popularity of this dance had declined in the beginning of 20th century. Revitalization era was begun in the end of 1960’s through searched old documents for reconstruction.
