Batu Bulan, the Village of Cultural Art

Batu bulan which situated in Gianyar regency is one of the most interesting places in Bali. It is only 10 kilos away from Denpasar and will only take approximately 10 minutes from Bali’s main city: Denpasar. This village is very well known for its carving arts. Not only that, Batu Bulan also a place to held traditional Kecak, Legong and Barong Dance. Many local and foreign tourist come to this beautiful village to shop and to enjoy traditional dance.

The name Batu Bulan has its own history. The story starts when Dewa Agung Kalesan, son of one of Badung King, is given the authority to build a palace in the middle of the forest. So there he went, to the forest in east of Badung Kingdom. during the journey, he finally found a stone (batu in Indonesian) which shone like a moon (bulan in Indonesian). So there he built his kingdom and name the place Batu Bulan or literally translated into Moon Stone.

This 6,422 km square village is unique for most of the villagers do carving for their living. This skill has become heredity from their ancestor. No wonder there are many art shops selling art craft and souvenirs along the road in Batu Bulan Village. Most of the carving here is made of stone. It takes many shapes from Ganesha, Buddha, gods and goddess and also other modern shapes.

This village also has regular place to held traditional dance show for visitors. Many travel agents arranging to visit his village to entertain their tourist with the festive of gamelan, traditional music, and dance. The most famous dance is Barong Dance. Barong is a mythical Balinese creature that shape like a giant dog with long tongue and sharp teeth. There is also Kecak dance which performed in a mass way. Some man will dress in a black and white kilt-like and make distinct sound with their mouth. Very recommended to be seen while you are visiting Bali.

If you are in Bali and planning to come to visit this village, tell your travel agent. Or you can hire a taxi and go there by yourself. The dance ticket is so affordable and very worth to spend. And not to forget, brig home some wood or stone carving to remind you about your cultural visit in Batu Bulan.
